Background: Today’s Indonesia’s fintech landscape is like the Tom and Jerry cartoon – the powerful regulatory bodies tirelessly chasing the crafty startup, barely managing to escape. As the list of fintech startups keeps getting longer every day, only a fraction of it has obtained a license from OJK – as of May 2019, there are 113 startups registered through OJK, with just 7 of them obtaining a business permit. Fintech startups operating without a license argue regulations add burden to their growth, yet regulatory bodies stand firmly based on the mandate of the law. Adding the continuous and exponential advancement of technology, packed with rapid adaptation – i.e. Cryptocurrency and Facebook’s Libra – one can only imagine where the direction of fintech in Indonesia are going. Does it always have to be this way?

One thing all parties agree is financial services are key to a nation’s economic growth. Indonesia is projected to become the fifth biggest economy in the world by 2030, this projection will only be possible with the existence of strong financial services. Fintech startups act as financial services catalysts – creating opportunity and inclusivity, with a knack for innovation, in the quest of fulfilling financial hygiene with the best user experience for all Indonesians. More than strong, healthy financial services operating within the corridors of the law is equally imperative in making sure the playing ground is level to all parties, this is where government policing plays a crucial role. How can startups foster innovation while regulatory bodies policing them to operate within the corridors of the law?

How can startups and regulatory bodies collaborate in shaping communally beneficial regulations? What does Indonesia’s fintech landscape look like in the future? Most importantly, how can our collaboration contribute to the prosperity of our nation?

Objective:
Connecting startups with key persons in the regulatory bodies in hope of mutual collaboration and providing the big picture understanding of fintech and regulations in Indonesia of now and the future.
